A well-designed disaster supply kit can be invaluable during a disaster. Be sure to plan for the number of employees who may need it.
The American Red Cross recommends that your supply kit include at least the following:
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Battery-powered radio
- Nonperishable foods to sustain each person for one day, such as ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits, vegetables and juice, as well as high-energy granola and energy bars
- 1 gallon of water per person, per day
- First- aid kit
- Mylar blankets
- Disposable plates, cups and utensils
- Nonelectric can opener
- Personal hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes, contact lens solution and feminine products
- Plastic garbage bags
Additional tips
To complement your disaster supply kit:
- Get a weather alert radio and monitor it
- Post emergency numbers and procedures throughout your facility
- Plan evacuation routes and procedures for employees and customers, and ensure that all employees have copies of the plans
- Plan ahead to accommodate individuals with special needs
